The Appeal of the PVC Fence for Ottawa Homeowners
Compared to wood or iron fences, there are many options for PVC fence that Ottawa residents can choose from these days. The PVC itself was discovered in the 1800s, except that no one back then knew how to properly use it, especially for commercial applications. It was only during the 1950s when vinyl became more widespread, but it wasn’t until the 80s that vinyl fence was available for Ottawa homeowners.
And yet despite a rather recent beginning, the popularity of the PVC fence in Ottawa is undeniable. This is despite the fact that it doesn’t have the “authentic” appeal of real wood fences. What’s more, the upfront cost of building this kind of fence is greater than the cost of wooden fences.
Advantages of the PVC Fence
So let’s consider the benefits of opting for a PVC fence in Ottawa:
- It’s more economical in the long run. You don’t need to spend money on constant maintenance, which is in stark contrast to what you need to with a wood fence. You don’t have to treat it with chemicals for additional protection. It won’t rust at all so you can leave it under the rain. It also won’t rot, and insects aren’t attracted to the vinyl material. It’s also already readily resistant to ultra violet rays.
- It’s easier to maintain. You don’t really need to do anything to maintain PVC fence in Ottawa. It doesn’t require any maintenance at all.
- It’s much stronger than wood. Its tensile strength is almost 5 times that of wood, and it is also 4 times more flexible. That means this type of fence can withstand stronger winds that wood fences can’t, and wood fences are much more likely to break when subjected to outside forces. Vinyl fences can also withstand impacts better than wood, so you don’t have to worry as much when you have rambunctious kids and pets in your home. PVC fences are so strong that many brands come with a lifetime guarantee.
- It’s very safe for everyone and for the environment. It’s non-toxic, it doesn’t produce slivers or splinters, and it can even be recycled.
And finally, since it’s a kind of plastic, you can choose from many different colors and texture to get the look you want.
Two Types of Production Methods
There are 2 ways of producing a PVC fence. One way is the co-extruded method, which is more expensive of the two. This involves 2 separate layers for the fencing, with each layer having separate properties. Usually, the outer layer provides UV resistance while the inner layer accounts for the fence’s strength and flexibility.

There are two basic production techniques for PVC fence material:
Mono-extruded: One solid layer of all the same ingredients. Some mono-extruded manufacturers may lower the percentage of the more expensive ingredients to save money.
Co-extruded: Created two separate layers. The inner substrate contains impact modifiers and strengthening agents and the outer layer, known as cap-stock, contains higher levels of titanium dioxide, which provides UV resistance. This is the more expensive process. Both processes have the ability to create a quality product!
